Also, I'm not offended at all, but I'm not going to change it. I know the things I write sometimes don't make sense at the time, but I always try to connect them and have them resolve as the story progresses. The problem with reading a WIP is that you have to wait and often by then people have forgotten. I can spoil you if you like, but the desire to control metal (aside from being an allusion to canon) stems from a childhood memory that's going to come up as we explore Erik's issues surrounding his parent's death. It seemed surreal, but that was what I wanted it to seem (you'll note in the next chapter that Erik rather blocks the entire incident from his mind). I also wanted it to seem a little far-reaching, because we're dealing with the human psyche now, and a traumatized, repressed one at that, so I wanted to approach it through metaphor and imagery.
You may not like the eventual outcome, and perhaps you'll still think it ought to be removed, but, of course, all interpretations of fiction are perfectly valid. I hope its reference will become clear as we move on. Thank you, too, for feeling you could approach me with this. It's actually really exciting to me that someone fixated on it, because I honestly was worried no one would notice.
